Ghetto Prom Dresses

I have heard a lot about a ghetto prom; what is it exactly? My first thought is that it is a cheap prom dance thrown for lower-class students who simply can't afford nice gowns or tuxedos.

After doing some research on the subject, I discovered that a lot of people consider skimpy outfits as symbols of ghetto prom dresses. These are dresses that show way too much skin, and may have a large number of unnecessary straps.

Basically these are gowns that just look trashy and altogether ridiculous. The especially funny ones are dresses that would already look bad on a skinny girl, but on an overweight girl, they look even worse.

Stay away from anything that might look "ghetto"!

Are Elementary School Proms Appropriate?

There are many ways in which the trends that used to occur for older people are now a thing for the much younger of the generations. For example, children in preschool are learning to use computer programs. Elementary school kids have their own cell phones as well.

So would it be totally inappropriate for elementary school to have their own proms? The prom would have to be different, of course, than the high school proms are. There could be more adult supervision and less pressure to have a date.

It might be a fun way for little kids to get dressed up and celebrate their graduation from elementary school; not to mention that parents would get to see their young boys dressed up in a tux.

Project Runway's Challenge For the Best Prom Dresses

I am a huge fan of Project Runway, a competitive reality show on Bravo where contestants compete against each other to see who is the next top fashion designer.

Last week's episode was all about prom. Contestants were matched up with one of many New Jersey Catholic High School girls, for whom they were to design a prom gown.

The best prom dresses in the competition, at least the ones I liked the most, were not the big winners this week. Instead, the winning gown was a pretty simple blue frock with different colored rhinestones at the neck.

I will admit that the dress was cute, but not nearly elegant enough to wear to a formal event. It was short and plain, and quite frankly, it looked like a gown to wear to a dinner, not to a prom.

Wearing Exotic Prom Dresses

It's fun for girls to dress up for prom; more than just an opportunity to look beautiful, it is also an opportunity to try something new and different.

If you want to make a statement on prom night and an express a different and unique side of you, exotic prom dresses can be really fun. I, for one, am a little tired of seeing the pastel puffy dresses that were worn in the eighties, or the typical scandalous black dress.

So what makes a prom dress more exotic than the other? Exotic does not necessarily mean sexy, despite some misinterpretations of the word. Exotic could mean a different print, like a floral or animal print, or could just be a different fabric or beading thatn is normally seen or worn.

Gothic Prom Dresses... Big Suprise!

For all those girls out there who think they are part of that 1990's fad of being goth chicks, I suppose they are going to show up prom night wearing black gothic prom dresses.

After all, a girl who wears all black makeup and clothing every other day of the year can't show up on prom night actually trying to look pretty!

I do feel sorry for these girls in many ways. Whenever I see one, I immediately assume she is just reacting to negative circumstances in her life, and doesn't know any other way but to diminish her sense of beauty and self.

It also amazes me that these girls justify what they do by considering themselves "different" than the rest. They might be different than some, but they are not unique; they are gothic. There is a word for it because there are many others just like them.
